  • What People Are Saying About Military Mom Talk Radio

"Buck Stienke and I were honored to be on Military Moms Talk Radio show last week. Wow! What a dedicated bunch of wonderful (and witty) ladies. We're proud to be a part of and associated with a group like Military Moms in support of and dedicated to our armed forces, both past and present. Oorah!" - Ken Farmer and Buck Stienke Co-Authors of the Black Eagle Force series. "Appearing on Military Mom Talk Radio was a fantastic experience. Sandra and her team were wonderful to work with. Programs such as this one are so important because they cut through the hype and sensationalism and offer real military families a chance to address the general public about the realities of military life. All too often, the media focus is on the hardships of military life, so it's refreshing to have an outlet like Military Mom Talk Radio where guests can share not only the challenges of military life, but also the rewards. Less than one percent of our citizens serve in the Armed Forces. Understandably, there's a huge military/civilian divide. With our country involved in two wars, we can all benefit from more programming featuring the stories of real military families." - Andi Hurley

Military Mom Radio is a great resource that can be downloaded anywhere and anytime, enabling our military to know they are appreciated and providing the civilian community opportunities to get involved in great causes.

Gina Sclafani is a Writer and Creative Director in advertising who has worked on major brands such as Downy, Pringles, Kraft, Seagram’s, Mars, Hasbro, Panadol as well as the Ad Council.  Gina is also a single mom who has helped over 800 troops.

Gina has no military background and had no involvement until a random event inspired her to adopt a soldier. When she saw the difference she was making for this soldier and his family, she was inspired to do more.

Gina noticed that when she spoke about her soldiers, people felt more connected and would often be moved to take action.  So she started a blog, Gina left the mall to increase the impact.  In it, she shares the good, bad, funny and sometimes heartbreaking things she’s learned.  She hopes to inspire others to care, provide information for those who want to put that care into action, and ultimately, help close the divide between military and civilians.

Gina lives in Manhattan with her daughter Sofia who is her greatest joy and biggest helper when it comes to supporting our brave men and women.

That Time, That Place, That War is an illustrated reference book that sprang from  Margaret Brown’s experiences teaching this honors program.  The book is arranged alphabetically from Alpha through Zulu, explaining the general vernacular of the infantrymen during the Vietnam War.  With poetry by the soldiers themselves and photos very personal and unique to those who were there, those who remember, those who might not have shared their story in any other way, Margaret’s book is poignant and depicts perspectives not published before.

Participants learn valuable leadership and teamwork skills, make new friends, and develop a lifelong love of horses!   Many of the facilities are equine rescues and others offer free programs to all veterans and their families!

Sydney Knott, Founder/President/Executive Director of Horses4Heroes, Inc. is a Santa Barbara-native.  She grew up on a steady diet of John Wayne movies, “Gunsmoke,” “Bonanza,” and her favorite books were by Marguerite Henry.  Although horses weren’t part of her life, they were her passion since she was a little girl.  A public relations professional for the past 30 years, Syd won her industry’s highest honor, The Silver Anvil, for a public relations campaign promoting the Resolution Trust Corporation.  In 1999, she fulfilled a lifelong dream to finally own a horse.  Her first horse, like her favorite book, was named Misty!  It was, however, her father’s diagnosis of terminal lung cancer, that became the catalyst for the creation of Horses4Heroes, a national non-profit dedicated to providing affordable horseback riding programs to the heroes and their families in our communities.

Veterans Moving Forward is committed to transforming the lives of physically and mentally challenged veterans, helping them assimilate into society and lead productive and fulfilling lives.  Veterans Moving Forward has a unique plan to serve this deserving community – to provide “service” dogs to those who have served our country and who are now in need.

Over 750,000 veterans either currently need or could benefit dramatically from having an assistance/service dog to mitigate his/her disability, and this number will grow.   Additionally, strong evidence points to a significant reduction in therapy time, effort and money when dogs are introduced into therapy during recovery and rehabilitation.

Training an assistance/service dog starting today means the dog will be ready for assignment in about two years.  Veterans Moving Forward trains dogs to the highest possible level (to serve as either a service, facility, therapy or comfort dog) and then assigns it to a veteran based on the dog’s aptitude and training and on and the veteran’s degree of need at the time of placement or engagement.

Veterans who have partnered successfully with a service dog and recover to greater functionality will be offered an opportunity to work for VMF to serve other veterans in need.

Karen D. Jeffries, president and co-founder of the non-profit Veterans Moving Forward, Inc., is also a management consultant with more than 25 years experience working directly for senior leaders of the federal government and chief executives of commercial corporations in the Washington, DC area. Ms. Jeffries is a retired naval officer and owner of Jeffries Communications Group LLC, a Service-Disabled, Veteran-Owned, Small Business (SDVOSB) specializing in marketing, business development and communications

He is currently deployed to Afghanistan.

At the age of 10 they gave Benjamin a Christmas Gift Certificate for Build-A-Bear Workshop. For as long as they can remember Ben has always wanted to join the Army. So, it really came as no surprise that he named his bear Sarge and dressed him in an Army uniform. On his 18th birthday in August 2010 Ben joined the Army as an active duty soldier.

Before heading for Basic Training at Fort Benning, GA they gave Sarge a new uniform. Ben instantly recognized that Sarge was promoted to General Sarge. Dr. Rus started taking daily pictures of things General Sarge was doing each day and it has now grown into an organization that “deploys” Build-A-Bear Workshop teddy bears to military children.

General Sarge’s mission has grown beyond the Jeffrey’s living room to a website serving hundreds of military families.  Weekly and monthly salutes go out to honor military children, the Gift-A-Bear Campaign including the Fallen Hero Bear and Deployment Bear Mascot programs.  Operation B.E.A.R. recruits individuals, businesses and organizations to Bring Encouragement And Recognition as sponsors.  Additionally, General Sarge’s Families First Campaign partners with the Fresh Wind Ministries to help offset the traveling expense to a family member so they are able to attend the graduation of their troop from Basic Training.

Operation Gratitude Introduces “Battalion Buddies”

Having already shipped more than 600,000 care packages to service men and women deployed in combat zones, Operation Gratitude is pleased to announce the launch of “Battalion Buddies” — a new program designed to serve and encourage the young children of deploying troops.

In cooperation with Family Readiness Officers and battalion leaders nationwide, Operation Gratitude will begin providing special stuffed toys – known as Battalion Buddies – to the sons and daughters of U.S. military personnel as their units prepare to deploy.

“Our hope is these gifts will offer some degree of comfort to children while their moms and dads are far away, serving their country,” explained Operation Gratitude founder, Carolyn Blashek.  “We want the children to know that they too have caring friends across the country who are aware of their sacrifices and send their appreciation.”

Aided by an initial donation of 28,000 stuffed toys hand-made by employees of the McKesson Corporation, and a follow-up donation of the cards by Tobu Print Group, Operation Gratitude was inspired to provide Battalion Buddies by the Commanding Officer of the National Guard armory in which the group operates.  LTC Angel Ortiz, seeing the McKesson stuffed animals during a recent Care Package Assembly, asked whether Operation Gratitude could donate some for his units that would soon deploy.

“I realized these cuddly animals would be a perfect item for the children to hug as they were about to say ‘Good-bye’ to their parent,” said LTC Ortiz.  “In addition, the animals would be a beautiful gift from the American people to say ‘Thank You’ to the military children who serve our nation in their own special and courageous way.”

As with its Care Packages to deployed troops, Operation Gratitude’s Battalion Buddies program will provide every American opportunities to encourage the children of troops serving in combat by making financial donations to purchase and ship Battalion Buddies.

Donations can be made online here: Donate to Battalion Buddies or by check made payable and addressed to:

Today we’ll take a look at stress relative to time.  When we can’t control time how do we manage energy and stress? Folks are often in deployment cycles waiting (too much time) – while on a day-to-day basis the single parent at home is “out of time.” Research from the corporate world invites people to consider – if you can’t manage time, manage your energy and stress. Time is finite – energy can be expanded and stress can be reduced. How can we expand energy – how can we help children do the same?  A related and interesting topic is while everyone knows that couples argue about money, kids and sex, a less visible but stressful topic for couples is “Why Couples Disagree About Time.”

Suzanne is author of three books and over twenty articles.  Most recently she co-authored, Healing Together: A Couple’s Guide to Coping with Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress. She has appeared on national TV as well as Radio.  She blogs weekly on Psych Central (Healing Together for Couples) and Healthywomen.com. Her blogs have also appeared on Huffington Press and PBS This Emotional Life. In 2012 She was chosen as Psychologist of the Year for the Suffolk County Psychological Association. Steven Appelbaum has been a professional dog trainer for over 30 years and he is the President and founder of Animal Behavior College (ABC), the largest animal career vocational college of its kind in North America.  ABC offers certification programs for Dog Trainers, Veterinary Assistants, and Pet Groomers and the courses are available in all 50 states and every Canadian province.

Appelbaum always knew that dogs were his passion in life and that someday he would devote his career to working with them. In 1977, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he worked as a Security Specialist and Patrol Dog Handler and trainer. Upon leaving the Air Force, Appelbaum began his journey towards becoming a seasoned expert in dog behavior and training.  He went on to attend numerous conferences, seminars and educational programs to further build on the dog training education he received in the military.

Appelbaum learned that there was a great demand for dog trainers who were in need of a structured education and in 1998 these revelations led him to create Animal Behavior College, where students are making positive, lasting changes in the lives of animals. Much of ABC’s success is due to its unique program design which combines an in-home study curriculum with hands-on externship training.

Steve is a devoted “pet parent” to his Bassett Hound Truffles and he is the author of the book The ABC Practical Guide to Dog Training.  He is a lecturer, consultant, and a member of the Love That Dog Hollywood podcast team.

Sue Lynch, There and Back Again, Military Mom Talk Radio, Assistance for veterans, Helping veterans reintegrate, Reintegration for veterans, Charlestown Yoga, Sandra Beck, Tina Gonzales, Robin Boyd, Motherhood IncorporatedThere & Back Again is a non-profit reintegration program offered at no cost to veterans of all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. Because of their combat service abroad, many veterans return home with a myriad of complex emotional issues, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). TABA offers a structured program of yoga, meditation and alternative approaches to healing the whole body to help veterans transition back to their lives stateside.

Our objective is teach veterans how to use breath awareness, meditation and yoga to manage their symptoms of PTSD, to improve their relationships with loved ones, to begin to fully participate in their lives, and to give back to their fellow veterans through TABA’s Train the Trainer program. TABA is comprised of respected professionals who are dedicated to the healing of our military men and women, and our program is based on both the latest research on the benefits of alternative therapies and staff and advisory board members’ personal successes managing symptoms of PTSD.  For more information, visit http://www.thereandback-again.org.

Executive Director Sue Lynch is an attorney and an officer in the Judge Advocate General Corp in the US Army Reserve.  A veteran herself having served in the Gulf War and in Kosovo, Sue found practicing yoga to be instrumental in recovering from PTSD, became a certified yoga instructor and has since opened her own yoga practice in Charlestown, MA where she also offers Train The Trainer programs for There And Back Again.  Based on her personal experience, Sue is passionate about offering a comprehensive approach to healing to her fellow veterans now, not 10 years from now, so that they too can find relief. Sue works with the Veterans Administration, Vet Centers, Yellow Ribbon Program, Warrior Transition Program and Department of Veteran Services to educate and train staff and veterans on techniques to facilitate self-care. Being in charge of our own healing paves our journey back to ourselves.

The Reminder Book was born in December, 2007, when the author’s mother, Dorothy, age 88, was in nursing care for rehabilitation after a prolonged hospital stay. Dorothy had vascular dementia, which caused frequent confusion, excessive worry, and debilitating sadness, especially when her loved ones were absent.

Unable to find a tangible resource that Dorothy could use to help remind, calm and reassure herself when alone or upset, her daughter conceived an idea— writing a collection of personalized self-help reminders for her mother! That little book soon became Dorothy’s “constant companion”. It proved to be a wonderful resource for Dorothy, as well as a great collaborative tool for her family, friends, and care-givers.

Dorothy has since passed away, but her legacy, as the inspiration for The Reminder Book, lives on! Now revised and re-written, the book has been published to help others with memory disorders and/or brain injury, and, to promote “peace of mind” — for them and those they love.

Author Emma (Cormier) Donnelly is originally from Massachusetts. She holds a degree in Early Childhood Education and has been a flight attendant for United Airlines since 1979.

Ms. Donnelly has long been a voice for empowering others. Over the years, she has served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for abused/neglected children (Lawrence, MA) and as an advocate for taxpayers/ratepayers (Methuen, MA), which led to candidacies for State Representative and Mayor.

Now living in Hampton, NH, Ms. Donnelly has written and self-published The Reminder Book, her first and only published work. The book is dedicated to her parents, both of whom suffered the challenges of cognitive decline before their passing. It is now being marketed to gift shops, book stores, hospitals, nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities.
