 Our Army Family Relocation Specialists would like to salute some of the many outstanding charities and organizations that serve our military community along with their families and past or present service members.  We think the story of Give 2 the Troops is told best by founder Andi Grant.

In December of 2002, my husband, Brian (Sgt in USMC) and his fellow Marine Reservists received their one-year deployment orders for Operation Iraqi Freedom. As he packed and attended briefings, I decided that I, too, needed to do something for the troops. I couldn’t sit back for a year and be a “spectator” – I needed to do something to show my support.

I vowed to write my husband daily and send him anything he needed. But I was also concerned about troops who didn’t receive mail from family or friends – I was worried about their morale. I wanted to make sure every deployed troop felt remembered, appreciated and loved.

I had military friends who were already deployed for OIF and I sent them care packages, but wanted to do more. Then a few groups who supported our troops asked me to send care packages to some of their contacts. My list of 50 troops grew to several hundred pretty quickly.

Sending the packages helped take my mind off of worrying about my husband, and helped me feel as if I was contributing in some small way to boosting our troops’ morale. It was the least I could do.

My 10-year-old son, Ryan, was very worried about my husband. I knew he needed to be involved to help him cope. I contacted his elementary school, choir and friends and everyone was ecstatic to help. Word spread quickly and cards and donations for the troops arrived daily at our doorstep. Sometimes it took hours to bring all the donations inside. Many nights, I’d come home from work to find 18-wheeler trucks with pallets of donations sitting in my driveway! Hundreds of strangers arrived each night to help us carry the donations to my tiny basement, where we’d pack boxes for our troops. Boxes were stacked up to our ceiling. Our tables and chairs were covered with bags of donations. It was hard to find a spot to sit or eat. It was unreal, but it was great.

The more troops who wrote back to us, the more packages we sent. Word about our care packages spread quickly amongst deployed troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait and the Persian Gulf. Families contacted us asking if we could assist their loved ones, and we added those troops to our lists. Our first month, we sent 129 enormous boxes to more than 4,000 troops. The next month, we sent out 232 boxes. And it has continued on …

What started out as a personal project evolved into an ongoing community effort. More elementary schools, middle schools and universities joined us. People from other states began calling asking how they could help. Donations came in from all over the nation and even other countries! It was very heartwarming to know so many people care about our troops and want to support them. The support my son and I received from our community while Brian was deployed, helped us get through a very tough year. There are no words to express my gratitude for the love we received and all the support given to our family and our troops.

In June, 2004, I selected the name “Give2TheTroops” for our organization and we became incorporated in the State of Connecticut. Shortly thereafter, I opened branches in other states. Our goal is to show our troops that communities in every state support and appreciate them. We are fortunate to have many GIVE2THETROOPS volunteers and donors from all over the United States (and the globe) who help us continue our Mission.

Some people asked why I continued to lead our Mission after Brian returned home from his deployment. My answer is simple:

“Brian returned safely to us – not a hair on his head was harmed. Many families were not as fortunate as we are. We still have many troops in harm’s way and families who are anxious – this is my payback to all those troops and their families.”

 Our Army Family Relocation Specialists would like to salute some of the many outstanding charities and organizations that serve our military community along with their families and past or present service members. 

The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supportsAmerica’s military in their time of need. The program recognizes the special sacrifices of our men and women in uniform and the hardships of military service by meeting a humanitarian need beyond that normally provided by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs.

Because members of the Military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House Foundation donates “comfort homes,” built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times – during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.

There is at least one Fisher House at every major military medical center to assist families in need and to ensure that they are provided with the comforts of home in a supportive environment. Annually, the Fisher House program serves more than 11,000 families, and have made available nearly three million days of lodging to family members since the program originated in 1990. By law, there is no charge for any family to stay at a Fisher House operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs; and Fisher House Foundation uses donations to reimburse the individual Fisher Houses operated by the Army, Navy, and Air Force. No family pays to stay at any Fisher House!

In addition to constructing new houses, Fisher House Foundation continues to support existing Fisher Houses and help individual military families in need. We are also proud to administer and sponsor Scholarships for Military Children, the Hero Miles program, and co-sponsor the Newman’s Own Award.

 Our Army Family Relocation Specialists would like to salute some of the many outstanding charities and organizations that serve our military community along with their families and past or present service members. 

Soldiers’ Angels is a volunteer-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing aid and comfort to the men and women of the United States Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and their families. Founded in 2003 by the mother of two American soldiers, its hundreds of thousands of Angel volunteers assist veterans, wounded and deployed personnel and their families in a variety of unique and effective ways.

 ”May No Soldier Go Unloved,” encapsulates the motivation behind Soldiers’ Angels.   The volunteers of Soldiers’ Angels work tirelessly to demonstrate active care and concern for veterans, the wounded, deployed service members and their families.

To date, our volunteers have sent hundreds of thousands of care packages and letters to “adopted” deployed service members; we have supplied the wounded with over 25,000 of our First Response Backpacks directly at the Combat Support Hospitals in Iraq and Afghanistan and the major military hospital in Germany, as well as provided care and comfort to those in stateside military and VA facilities; we have provided emergency aid to military families in need; we have partnered with the Department of Defense to provide voice-controlled/adaptive laptops to over 6,000 severely-wounded service members, as well as other technology that supports rehabilitation; we have provided flights to soldiers on leave or in emergency situations, and to their families wanting to be with them upon return from overseas; we provided Level III KEVLAR armored blankets to give personnel extra protection in their vehicles when it was needed early in the Iraq war; and we help to honor and uphold the families whose loved ones have paid the ultimate price for our freedom and safety. With the assistance of our generous supporters, the many volunteers of Soldiers’ Angels have accomplished this and much, much more on behalf of the grateful citizens of theUnited States of America.

Since its founding in 1881 by visionary leader Clara Barton, the American Red Cross has been the nation’s premier emergency response organization. As part of a worldwide movement that offers neutral humanitarian care to the victims of war, the American Red Cross distinguishes itself by also aiding victims of devastating natural disasters. Our Army Family Relocation Specialists would like to salute some of the many outstanding charities and organizations that serve our military community along with their families and past or present service members. 

Tens of thousands of American Service Members are deployed in hostile and remote regions of the world, including the Middle East, Afghanistan, and on ships throughout international waters. The physical conditions they must endure are difficult and they may be separated from loved ones for long periods of time.

Operation Gratitude seeks to lift morale and put smiles on faces by sending care packages addressed to individual Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines deployed in harm’s way.** Operation Gratitude care packages contain food, hygiene products, entertainment items and personal letters of appreciation, all wrapped with good wishes of love and support.

Through Collection Drives, Letter Writing Campaigns and Donations of funds for shipping expenses, Operation Gratitude provides civilians anywhere in America a way to express their respect and appreciation to the men and women of the U.S. Military in an active, hands-on manner.

Operation Gratitude is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, volunteer-based corporation, funded entirely by private donations. For safety and security, the assembling of all packages occurs at the Army National Guard Armory inVan Nuys,California.

**Wounded Warrior Care Package Program: 

Operation Gratitude works with representatives at Military hospitals and Wounded Warrior Transition Units to provide care packages for Wounded Warriors/Veterans to let them know they are never forgotten.

Recognizing that Warriors when first injured are most concerned with the well-being of their comrades still on the frontlines, we also offer a service to send care packages to the wounded’s buddies.  Not only does this let the downrange troops know their wounded comrade is thinking about them, but most importantly, it helps the wounded feel they are still contributing to the mission and supporting their comrades. 

 Who We Serve:

Operation Gratitude sends packages to Wounded Warriors and deployed members of all Military branches: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and to units from all states and territories. While we will send at least 100,000 care packages per year, we know the recipients share with their comrades, so we project that at least 250,000 service members will be directly touched by our program annually. In addition, the impact of our program on morale is felt generally throughout the Military (2.7 million people) and by the loved ones of those who serve (several million more).

 Demographics of Population Served::

The demographics of Operation Gratitude recipients mirror the overall makeup of our Armed Forces, which in turn closely reflect the American population.  The 2008 published survey results:

African-American:  12%
Asian:                      3%
Caucasian:            65%
Hispanic:               13%
Native American:    2%
Other (describe):    5%            Declined to Specify 

 The gender demographics of our recipients also reflect the overall makeup of our Armed Forces, which is approximately 85% male and 15% female.
