  • What People Are Saying About Military Mom Talk Radio

"Buck Stienke and I were honored to be on Military Moms Talk Radio show last week. Wow! What a dedicated bunch of wonderful (and witty) ladies. We're proud to be a part of and associated with a group like Military Moms in support of and dedicated to our armed forces, both past and present. Oorah!" - Ken Farmer and Buck Stienke Co-Authors of the Black Eagle Force series. "Appearing on Military Mom Talk Radio was a fantastic experience. Sandra and her team were wonderful to work with. Programs such as this one are so important because they cut through the hype and sensationalism and offer real military families a chance to address the general public about the realities of military life. All too often, the media focus is on the hardships of military life, so it's refreshing to have an outlet like Military Mom Talk Radio where guests can share not only the challenges of military life, but also the rewards. Less than one percent of our citizens serve in the Armed Forces. Understandably, there's a huge military/civilian divide. With our country involved in two wars, we can all benefit from more programming featuring the stories of real military families." - Andi Hurley
  • Carolyn Blashek of Operation Gratitude

Military families are our nation's treasure. Yet, spread around the world, they are not always aware of the great support they have here at home. Operation Gratitude Shares the Loss of Joan Mazzarelli

Joan Mezzarelli, Operation Gratitude, knitted scarves for troopsThere are many ways we here at home try to make a difference for our troops while they serve our country.  One woman in southern California has been dedicated to remembering the military in a very special way.  Our good friends at Operation Gratitude introduced the country to Joan Mazzarelli a few years ago, a woman who single handedly knitted an average of 500 scarves each year for Operation Gratitude to send to the military serving in Afghanistan.  You might say she’s experienced – she’s knitted for soldiers before… in World War 2.

Sadly, we’ve learned that Joan peacefully passed away last Saturday night in the arms of her daughter Paula Boland.  Joan graced this earth for exactly 99 years and 99 days. She will be sorely missed.

Joan’s funeral will be Tuesday in Granada Hills but eulogies will be held Monday from 5-7pm.  We hope that everyone could take a moment and remember Joan and her family in thought and prayer at 5 oclock.

Founder Carolyn Blashak will be speaking during the funeral service on Tuesday on behalf of Operation Gratitude and all the military who have been blessed by Joan’s kindness .

Joan’s family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Joan’s memory to Operation Gratitude.  Donations can be made here: Donate in Joan’s Memory or mailed to Operation Gratitude; 16444 Refugio Rd; Encino, CA 91436.  Please note the memorial with your donationn and a beautiful Tribute Letter will be sent to Joan’s family.

Please take a moment to learn more about this remarkable woman in this video from 2010: http://bit.ly/ybBxb1  .  May her spirit continue to warm the hearts of every soldier she so dearly cared for and dedicated her life to.  Thank you, Joan, and God bless.

Following anti-infiltration patrols along the South Vietnamese coast during which Vengeance pulled from the water downed pilots and sank an enemy vessel, the ship rotates between twenty-four hours inside, and then twelve out of the minefields which have strangled the sea lanes into North Vietnamese ports. The only break in this duty has Sam ashore at a dilapidated airfield at the mouth of the Red River to witness the release of severely maltreated American prisoners of war.

Based on historical events in which the author played a major role, ‘Sweeps honors the iron men who manned a wooden ship to help return 591 POWs.

Daughters, fathers and war – three words not often used together. In The Hidden Legacy of World War II: A Daughter’s Journey of Discovery, Carol  weaves life with her paratrooper father, Arthur Dutch Schultz, into the larger story of World War II and the homecoming of the Greatest Generation.  This personal story is combined with the author’s thorough research and investigation of the reality for those World War II veterans who could not forget the horrors of war. This nonfiction work fills in the missing pieces of the commonly accepted societal view of World War II veterans as stoic and unwavering, a true but incomplete portrait of that generation of warrior.

She published her first article in high school back in 1965.  Her writing credentials include many magazine, newspaper & web articles.  She also wrote columns — “The History of Aerial Applications” for AG Pilot International and one on writing topics for webzine “Scribe & Quill.”  She is a ghostwriter, an editor and a web, newspaper & book designer.

She has been a member of MWSA since 2006 and has served as Secretary and MWSA Webmaster since January of 2008.  Her skills include Management, Project Management, Web Site Design, Writing and Layout.  She volunteered for the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center for several years and has led various corporate, community and volunteer committees & organizations. Her goal is to help veterans record their piece of history — for themselves, their families, their communities — and our country.

“It all started when I wrote ‘In the Shadow of Suribachi’,” she says.  “It’s basically the story of my father’s experiences as a young Marine at the Battle of Iwo Jima.  That book has my heart.  It was also the beginning of my working to get veterans’ stories written and published.  Working with MWSA is an extension of that dream…to make sure that all of our history is recorded and recognized.”

Little did she know then that she was simply creating stories in my head.

Through writing, Kathleen has been able to explore many subjects. Her goal is always to get to the truth through the people and places she writes about, real or imagined. Along the way, she has encountered many roadblocks and detours, but has pressed ahead and kept her eyes on her goals.

In 2008, Leatherneck Publishing released Kathleen’s debut novel “The Final Salute.” The following year, Army Wife Network selected it as their July 2009 book club pick and Military Writers Society of America awarded it the Silver Medal. In July 2011, the Kindle Edition was released by Navigator Books.  In this novel, a Vietnam vet and father of three is haunted by the memories of dead friends killed in air mishaps, and must deal with a devious commander, an animal-crazed neighbor whose husband hates pilots, a beautiful, but suspicious wife and a rebellious teenage daughter. The last thing he needs is another war.

Additional work by Kathleen has appeared in Family Circle Magazine, Air Force, Army & Navy Times, Family: The Magazine for Military Families, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Albuquerque Journal, Clovis News Journal, and in three anthologies: “Because I Fly,” by McGraw-Hill, “Lessons From Our Children,” by Health Communications, Inc. and “Hearts of Steel,” by Military Writers Society of America.

Military Monument Unveiled in New Hampshire

The images of more than 60 members of the U.S. Army who served in World War 1, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan are engraved on the U. S. Army Monument which was unveiled  during a ceremony at the New Hampshire State Veterans Ceremony on Memorial Day. The monument was unveiled by Gov. John Lynch and retired Brig. Gen. Stephen Curry following a dedication ceremony.

Lynch paid tribute the members of the Gold Star Mothers attending the ceremony saying they have sacrificed so much by the loss of their children. He also paid tribute to those men and women who have served or are still serving in the Army.

Jonathan Halle of Warrenstreet Architects in Concord, NH was approached to design the monument, and he agreed to donate his time.  When asked, Halle said, “My dad’s retired Army, and you just can’t say no.”  New Hampshire corporations whose contributions helped fund the monument included Laconia Savings Bank, Public Service of New Hampshire, and Service Credit Union of Portsmouth.

Click on the Military Monument video at the right to view a slide show of the construction and dedication of this moving tribute.

Our thanks to DeeDee Rice, volunteer with the NH Army National Guard, for sharing the video!

Melissa also authored a very hear-felt book titled The Day After He Left for Iraq. For details on both ladies, their mission, and their books, visit www.herwarhervoice.com. First in the real estate industry fully dedicated to supporting Army personnel and their families during stressful long distance moves, GoArmyHomes has launched another website designed exclusively to assist service men and women undertaking a PCS relocation, this time for Shaw AFB. (ShawAFB.goarmyhomes.com).

The newest addition to GoArmyHomes base specific sites, the PCS Relocation Site for Shaw AFB includes detailed information on homes available for sale or rent, neighborhood and area schools, and financing options. Featuring an outstanding relocation section, it also offers tools such as the Personal Property Organizer to save home searches, as well as the Home Readiness Program and the Relocation Coach Program, both of which were created to save critical time, money and effort.

For most Army families, no matter how experiences at moving, the thought of a PCS to a new post like Shaw AFB can be stressful, despite the many opportunities the Shaw AFB, VA area has to offer. Having the tools and resources gathered in a single location at ShawAFB.GoArmyHomes.com makes the process far more efficient when finding a home or neighborhood that really fits the military family’s special requirements.

GoArmyHome’s mission is to provide assurance to every Army service member and their families that their particular needs as active military personnel are understood and will be fully addressed. These base specific sites are created under the guidance of men and women who have completed many military PCS moves, who have the knowledge and experience as to the support requires to make a relocation go smoothly. Staff dedicated to specific needs can be found at each site.
